About me

I'm Erika.  I'm a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the state of Colorado and Alaska, and owner of Thorn & Thistle Counseling. I currently live in Alaska on Dena’ina land and serve clients in both Colorado and Alaska virtually.

Hello!

Therapy is for everyone and I'm passionate about meeting people where they're at!  We're all human, and sometimes life requires vulnerability and digging deep into the hard and the heavy to find healing.  I believe it's ok to embrace the mess and chaos and believe that's where magic and healing is found.

I use an eclectic framework and utilize various modalities (CBT, solution-focused, DBT, etc) in a relaxed way.

I'm highly person-centered and my style could be described as warm, gentle, non-directive, & curious.  Therapy with me doesn't feel formal or stuffy; it feels like you're talking to a good friend, real, connected, raw at times, and safe and familiar.

I've been working in the mental health field since 2016!  I've worked in a variety of settings:  in a shelter with the unhoused, with probation/court ordered clients, substance use, and in both in-patient and outpatient facilities.  I received my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health in 2018.

In 2020 in the midst of the pandemic I switched to private practice to pursue my passion of
working with & empowering womxn through
exploring topics such as values, identity,
relationships,
self-esteem, boundaries, communication, parenthood, postpartum, and managing and improving
mental health
(focused on adjustment, anxiety, and depression).  I love seeing my clients gain a sense
of empowerment and confidence as they learn to better navigate the tides of life!

In real life I’m married to my partner of 15 years, a mom to three wild and beautiful children, and a
cat/dog/chicken mom (they count, too).  Nature, exploring, and mountains are my jam.  I live in Alaska and don't plan on ever leaving.  I  gave myself purple highlights over the summer and think self-expression in all forms is pretty rad.  I question 'how old is too old for a nose ring?' and tell myself the answer is 'never.'

I proudly share that I live with mental health diagnoses myself, and think attending therapy is one of the absolute best life-decisions you can make (shout out to my therapist if you're reading this!).  I am an advocate for combatting stigma through visibility and advocacy.

I want you to know that in so many instances, I've been there, too.  It can be life-changing to have someone who 'gets it.'  Whatever your unique circumstance, you don't have to do it alone.  You deserve support, you deserve healing, and you deserve hope.
